YBARRA ACADEMY OF THE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY 
AN INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE WORLD SCHOOL


Ybarra Academy of the Arts and Technology received official notice in September of 2011 that it is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB), Primary Years Programme, world school.
             
We are all very proud of the work of the students and staff at our school in the journey to becoming an IB world school.  Our journey continues daily through our units of inquiry in the classrooms and our ongoing collaboration among teachers.  


IB Mission
 
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
 
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Curriculum

A structured inquiry approach to learning is the basis of the program. Ybarra Academy's curriculum follows the framework and standards of the state of California.  
Teachers align this curriculum through six thoughtfully planned units of inquiry in the following transdisciplinary themes:

  • Where We Are in Place and Time
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How We Organize Ourselves
  • How the World Works
  • Sharing the Planet
 
Taking Action

Throughout the learning process, students are encouraged and recognized for their actions.  Actions may occur as a result of students applying new learnings from the units of inquiry. An action can also be purely self driven as students want to make a positive change in the school, community, or world.  Actions may be the result of one student or a group of students, but must be completely self-initiated by the individual(s) taking action.
